Commentary
This print quotes a poem by Toshiyori at upper left: “We shall come again to the Tama River by the meadow path where the bush-clover grows, and it may be we shall see the moon’s image lying among the ripples.” The nobleman who is accompanied by two attendants may be a depiction of the poet. Six Tama Rivers (Shokoku mutamagawa), 1857
The six Tama (Crystal) Rivers were a popular subject, each river having its own particular theme. Hiroshige designed two Tama River series, one in horizontal format (mid-1830s), the other in vertical format (1857). [Text prepared for exhibition - Famous Views (2005)]
