Commentary
One of the earliest Tokaido series was designed by Hokusai. This view of Chiryu depicts a man watching two boys examining a large fish they have landed. The man wears a grass skirt over his short undergarment. Like the boys, he is barefoot. Two types of fishing gear are depicted – a long-handled net and a woven wicker fish trap. Mist partially obscures the mountain in the background.
