Commentary
Faith (Fides) Faith above all is to be preserved, particularly with respect to religion,
for God comes before, and is more mighty than, man.
Faith is personified as a woman dressed as a nun. She bears the tablets of the Old Testament Law of Moses (the Ten Commandments) on her head and points to the Bible, symbolizing the New Testament, which she holds in her other hand. A haloed phoenix, symbolic of Resurrection, sits atop the Bible. Faith stands upon the open tomb of the Risen Christ, surrounded by symbols of Christ’s Passion: among them the Cross, the sword that pierced Christ’s side, and the column at which he was scourged. Behind Faith, in the interior of the church, are scenes depicting key ceremonies or Sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church: Baptism, Communion, Marriage, and Confession. To the right a preacher addresses a large congregation.
