Commentary
Fortitude (Fortitudo)To conquer one's impulses, to restrain anger and the other vices and emotions: This is true fortitude.
A winged figure personifies Fortitude, the virtue that helps humans “soar above” and overcome the vices. Fortitude balances an anvil, a symbol of endurance, upon her head; she holds a column (steadfastness) and holds the chains of a dragon (evil) which she restrains underfoot. All about her rage battles between her warriors and various vices symbolized as beasts, including the toad (avarice), the peacock (pride), the swine (gluttony), the ass (sloth), as well as a host of monstrous hybrid creatures.
