Born Mike Meyer in Indian, Disfarmer moved to Heber Springs, Arkansas after his father died in 1914. After a tornado destroyed his house and killed his mother, he changed his name to Disfarmer to break away from his farming family roots. Disfarmer set up a portrait studio in Herber Springs with attached living quarters and took portraits of locals. His work was rediscovered in the 1970s and was valued because it pushed beyond the everyday to clearly capture the character of the people, place and time.
